  • Red River's New Sidewalks. A Novel Approach To Concrete Acquisition & Minimizing Disruption

Rob Swan Swan Realty As soon as the ski area closed the sidewalks started coming out. Red River is in the process of replacing our aging and deteriorating sidewalks. The current sidewalks were put in over two decades ago and at that time, Red River had no sidewalks and hundreds of unsightly overhead power lines. During the initial sidewalk construction, the overhead lines were placed under the sidewalks giving the town a much needed facelift. Fast forward twenty some years and our sidewalks are now due for an upgrade. The current project is headed up by GM Emulsions out of Santa Fe. According to Mayor Calhoun, the project is taking a novel approach in regard to the acquisition of the thousands of yards of concrete that will be needed. The traditional method of providing concrete is to purchase the premixed concrete from a batch plant in Taos and have it trucked to Red River. The cost of the traditional method is expensive due to the transportation costs of getting it to Red River 10 cubic yards at a time. GM Emulsions has invested in a portable batch plant so all the concrete can now be mixed right here in Red River, saving a tremendous amount of money on the project. The portable batch plant has been set up on the west side of the Conference Center and a portable lab on the east side to maintain quality control of the concrete. The project will be done in increments and is scheduled to last throughout summer 2024 and summer 2025. The project started across from Town Hall on the south side of Main St and will continue west until reaching the end of town when construction will move to the north side of Main St and continue back to Town Hall. The west side of town is scheduled to be completed this summer and the east side of town is scheduled for summer 2025. In order to minimize the disruption to businesses and guests, only one block will be done at a time. Once the sidewalk from one block is removed, it will be replaced before moving on to the next block. By using this approach, no more than one block will be disrupted at any given time.

  • I Just Upgraded My Red River, NM Drinking Experience

By Rob Swan of Swan Realty, March 16, 2024 I need to preface this article by admitting to the fact that I am in no way a connoisseur of adult beverages. My experience and knowledge of drinking has not progressed much from my college days when I got good at popping a top on a cold beer and pouring some bourbon into a glass. Don’t get me wrong, I have no complaints, cold beer and Jack Daniels has served me well over the years. However, prompted by the brokers in my office,  I recently ventured  into the Red River Breweries new distillery addition on the east side of Red River that specializes in craft cocktails. Craft cocktails, what?  As soon as I hear those words I usually go the other direction as I know this means foo foo drinks, which means that this is not my bar, and these are not my people. I was wrong! The space is great, the bartenders are top notch, the crowd is lively and fun, and the drinks are amazing. Let’s start with the space, the building is on Red River’s east side and formerly housed a t-shirt shop, a real estate office, a hardware store, a hairdresser, and maybe some other businesses prior to my time. The bar is not large as 20 people will fill it to the brim. For those old timers that are still around, it is reminiscent of the previously deceased Chubbies Tavern at the Alpine Lodge where everybody knows your name, your business, and overhears all your conversations, but therein lies the charm. The bartenders are fantastic, depending on when you go you may have the pleasure of being served by either Michael or Quinton, both of which are some of  the most down to earth and friendly people you will meet in Red River, they are also very talented drink makers, conversationalists and all around good guys. So now the drinks, the spirits are all distilled right here in Red River and done with precision and care, they must be, because the quality is superior to some of the best known brands, you can see for yourself, just order their spirit sampler, you won’t be disappointed. These great spirits are then blended into some of the best drinks I have ever had. How this blending part happens, I have no idea.  It appears that the drink making may involve some voodoo and a little hocus pocus as the bartender can be seen burning orange peels with a propane torch and blending those peels with other unknown substances that all eventually ends up as this amazing cocktail sitting in front of you. My personal favorite is their Smoked Old Fashioned. There is definitely no shortage of supernatural phenomena that goes into making this drink as it includes lighting wood chips on fire and trapping the smoke in your drink. Whatever else happened in the process to get that drink in front of me, I have no idea but it turned out to be the best drink I have ever had. Highly recommended! • Epic Snowstorm Pummels Red River

For the past 24 hours Red River has bared the brunt of a huge mid winter snowstorm. The National Weather Service had predicted 8 to 10 inches from this storm, however, over 24 inches has fallen within the last day and it's still coming. Private snowplow drivers were working overtime throughout the day keeping their customers roads and driveways open while the town of Red River had their big machinery out all day keeping the major roads passable and everyone you see has a big smile on their face. The storm is supposed to last until midnight Saturday night with at least a few more inches of accumulation expected. The ski area and snowmobile trails should be experiencing incredible conditions from all this new snow, which is just in time for our Mardi Gras celebration beginning this coming week. Make your plans to come up, it's going to be an epic week with Mardis Gras and tons of fresh powder. Rob Swan Swan Realty

  • How Did Mardi Gras Get To Red River, NM?

The Biggest Ski Town Party In The Southwest is the Mardi Gras in Red River, NM, but how did it get here? Mardi Gras transcends its New Orleans roots, as evidenced by its adoption in Red River, NM. This innovation began decades ago when the Red River Chamber of Commerce recognized that many Louisianans, traditionally in town for skiing during Mardi Gras, might appreciate a similar festivity. Louisiana natives lent their expertise, guiding our community in replicating an authentic Mardi Gras atmosphere. Their advice was straightforward: host as many parties as possible within a week, establish various 'Krews' to manage these parties, ensure an ample supply of alcohol and beads, then extend invitations to everyone. The concept swiftly gained traction among the local ski instructors who during that era were the vast majority of the Red River party scene. The thought of non-stop week long parties aligned perfectly with everything they believed in. Thus, 'Mardi Gras in the Mountains' was born. Over the years, this annual celebration has blossomed, consistently attracting throngs of visitors, filling hotels, bars, and restaurants. It's become a coveted mix of skiing, partying and socializing in our beloved mountain town. The event's highlights include a unique drink-making contest, known more for its entertaining, often risque performances than the cocktails themselves. Additionally, the nightly 'krew' balls, the entertaining Mardi Gras Parade, and the family-friendly kids' ball are major draws. If you are thinking about attending you can find more information on the official web page or by contacting the chamber of commerce. Rob Swan Swan Realty

  • Questa Car Show Spills Over Into Neighbors Front Yard

Spring is turning into car show season in Northern NM. Red River just finished up their 27th annual spring Car Show. This years show took place in the municipal parking lot adjacent to Brandenburg Park. According to this years organizer, Shena Canon, the event attracted 88 entries along with food vendors, a DJ, and plenty of eye candy for car enthusiasts. Questa just had their first and most likely to be annual car show with 97 entries and even included a bicycle division. Larry Sanchez, the organizer had only expected 50 entries and was overwhelmed on the morning of the event when almost 100 cars showed up. The space that was allocated for the event in the parking lot of the Living Word Ministries church parking lot was quickly overwhelmed. Luckily, a very accomodating adjacent neighbor offered up his front yard for the overflow and the event continued on. According to Sanchez, entries came from as far away as Central Colorado and Easter NM. When asked if he would be looking for a larger venue for next years show, he said it was definitely under consideration. • RED RIVER - Naked People No Longer Allowed In Forest.

On May 31st, the Carson National Forest issued a new rule banning public nudity within the Carson National Forest. Forest Service rule number 36 C.F.R. § 261.58(j) now prohibits "Being Publicly Nude" within the Carson National Forest. No one is sure why the rule was written but as with the emergence of most rules and laws, most likely someone was abusing the privilege necessitating the need for the new rule. So in order to get to the bottom of this, a call was made to the Questa Ranger District in order to find out why the rule was put in place and if it also applied to driving your dirtbike or UTV. A very helpful and friendly gentleman at the Forest Service explained that he had no knowledge of complaints of naked people in the forest but did confirm that you could be cited if you were naked or "flashed" someone, he also confirmed that this rule does also prevent you from driving your dirtbike or UTV without your clothes on. So now we know. If you are used to coming to Red River and running around in the forest in your birthday suit, you could now be cited into federal court where of course you will then for sure be required to put your clothes on. Stay out of trouble, keep your clothes on and we'll see you this summer.

  • Red River Has So Much Snow We Are Now Requesting Tourists To Take Some Home With Them

With almost 20" of snowfall within the past few days there is definitely plenty of the white stuff to go around. This weekend marks the last few days that the ski are will be open and once it is closed we are no longer in need of all this snow, so if you happen to be visiting, feel free to take home as much as you would like. Contrary to popular belief, snow doesn't just melt and go away, it first turns into mud then goes away, so the more you can take back with you, the less mud we will have to deal with. There is no special permit or paperwork needed, simply grab an armful, or better yet, get a shovel and start loading up your car. Red River has plenty of backhoes and wheel loaders around, so if you are in need of an extra large load, it can definitely be arranged. On another note, we would like to thank everyone who visited Red River this winter to partake in the never ending fun and shenanigans that we do so well and we can't wait to see you back here this summer. -Rob Swan Swan Realty
